Japchae is probably one of the most beloved Korean dishes - an essential dish at holiday gatherings and any celebration meal.  But it takes a lot of effort to cook it.  There are just too many ingredients to prepare!  Mrs Malaenge Japchae Kit is a brilliantly easy solution.  Shiitake mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, onions, carrots, and eggplants are washed, sliced, and dehydrated in perfect portions to make japchae.  All you need is to add dangmyun, sweet potato noodles, and your choice of protein like beef, pork, or none to add to it.  You’ll have japchae on your table in 30 minutes! 

Cooking Tips

  • Soak the vegetables in warm water for 10-15 minutes. 
  • Cook the sweet potato noodles in boiling water for 10 minutes
  • Stir-fry the noodles and vegetables with cooking oil then season with soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil
  • If you want less oil, skip the stir-frying and just mix the seasoning with the noodles and vegetables

-말랭이를 미온수에 10~15분 불리고, 당면도 10분 정도 따로 삶아낸 다음 잡채 양념(간장, 설탕, 참기름이 기본)에 볶아 드세요. ** 말랭이와 당면을 한 번에 담고 10분 정도 삶아 볶으셔도 괜찮습니다. 

-기름진 게 싫다면 볶지 마시고 삶은 다음 잡채 양념에 버물버물 무쳐서 드세요.

So tasty!

I have tried a bunch of the Mrs. Malenge dried veg kits, some a couple of times, and they have all been excellent. That said, I think that, of my repeat purchases, I have bought this japchae/잡채 kit the most. It’s probably my favorite, along with the doenjang jjigae/된장찌개 kit. I have used the latter to make doenjang jjigae, but I actually haven’t used the japchae kit to make japchae — instead, my preferred use for both is putting the dried veg on top of my rice in the rice cooker and letting them rehydrate while my rice cooks. I like to use partially brown rice with the veg - a nice earthiness with the sweetness of the cabbage or carrot, depending on which kit I am using. Then, I usually top the bowl with a tin of Morgada Portuguese mackerel (add in that super flavorful oil too!) and I have a pretty perfect dinner. Ugh! I am getting hungry now just writing about it… The last thing I would add - in general, I am super impressed with the Mrs. Malenge brand - other dried veg I have tried (not from Kim’C) is often broken up into small pieces in the package, or just seems a bit dull and lifeless - by contrast, the Malenge veg always arrives intact (no vegetable dust here!) and retaining its natural color, which really makes me feel like the veg was super fresh when dried. The flavor is excellent too - and the texture (especially, for example, of the mushrooms) is impressive for something that is rehydrated. Again, haven’t tried using this kit for its intended purpose but, if you’re looking to jazz up a rice bowl, I highly recommend giving this a whirl! (Note: you will likely need to add extra water to your rice cooker if you add the veg on top - I add extra water and still get a browned bottom on my rice which tells me I could add even more water, but I like the browned bottom, so I stick with adding just a bit extra.)
