Good to know: Each vase is thrown on the wheel, so size and shape vary slightly even within the same design. Slip is sprayed over the bisque, so color can differ a little; the glaze flows its own way on each vase; and the iron spots that bloom in the kiln vary in size and placement. These are part of how the pieces are made, not flaws.

Four shapes from one clay

The Songi collection takes its forms from old, traditional vessels and its texture straight from the clay. Mongdol is the Korean word for the smooth, round stones the sea polishes on a pebble beach, and the two Mongdol vases have that same weight and roundness, one taller with a narrow neck, one small and squat. One Hand is a low, rounded jug with a single loop of a handle, and Two Hands is a little jar with a handle on each side. Side by side they read as a family: one clay, one color, four different silhouettes.

Thrown on the wheel, finished in the kiln

Each Songi vase is thrown by hand on the potter's wheel. After the first firing, a layer of slip is sprayed over the bisque and a glaze goes on top, and in the final firing small iron spots bloom across the surface. None of it follows a template: the slip colors a little differently each time, the glaze runs its own way, and the iron spots land wherever the kiln puts them. That is why the line of a neck, the speckling, and the warm brown near the base shift slightly from vase to vase.

How to use them

Add a little water and give each vase a single stem: a sprig of spirea, a branch of pussy willow, a few blades of wild grass, or a dried seed head that will last for months. Group all four on a tray at the center of a dinner table, along a windowsill, or on a mantel, and vary what goes in each. Left empty, they hold their own on a bookshelf or a bedside table as small sculptures.

한 흙으로 빚은 네 가지 모양

송이 화병은 옛 그릇에서 형태를 빌려 오고, 질감은 흙 그대로 살렸습니다. 몽돌은 바닷가에서 파도에 깎여 둥글어진 돌을 부르는 말이에요. 두 몽돌 화병도 그만큼 묵직하고 둥근데, 큰 몽돌은 목이 가늘게 올라오고 작은 몽돌은 낮고 동그랗습니다. 한손은 고리 모양 손잡이가 하나 달린 낮은 주전자 모양이고, 두손은 양옆에 손잡이가 달린 작은 항아리 모양이에요. 나란히 두면 같은 흙, 같은 빛깔에 실루엣만 다른 한 식구처럼 보입니다.

물레로 빚고, 가마가 마무리한 화병

송이 화병은 하나하나 물레로 빚습니다. 초벌한 위에 화장토를 스프레이로 입히고 유약을 둘러 다시 구우면, 가마 안에서 표면에 작은 철점이 피어납니다. 화장토의 발색도, 유약이 흐르는 모양도, 철점이 피어나는 자리도 매번 조금씩 달라요. 그래서 목선과 점무늬, 아랫부분의 갈색까지 화병마다 조금씩 다른 표정을 지닙니다.
