A good wooden spatula isn't about being specialized — it's about being the right size for almost everything. Carved from a single piece of solid birch, this one is judged for everyday cooking: long enough to keep your hand away from the heat, broad enough to turn and gather, slim enough at the edge to scrape the bottom of the pan. Wood won't scratch nonstick coatings or clang against the pot, and it doesn't conduct heat, so the handle stays cool. Finished with natural beeswax, it keeps a crisp grain and stays easy to maintain; birch gives it a light, bright tone, and no two are exactly alike.

How to use it

Stir a pot of stew or sauce, fold and mix batter, scramble eggs, sauté vegetables, or scrape the fond off the bottom of the pan for a sauce. It's as at home stir-frying japchae or bokkeum as it is making risotto or a weeknight skillet dinner. Hand wash, dry, and don't leave it to soak; keep it out of the dishwasher and away from high heat, which can warp or crack wood over time. An occasional rub of food-safe oil keeps the wood from drying out, and with everyday use it only mellows into a warmer, lovelier tone.

찌개나 소스를 젓고, 반죽을 섞고, 달걀을 볶고, 채소를 볶고, 팬 바닥에 눌어붙은 감칠맛을 긁어 소스로 살릴 때 써요. 잡채나 볶음을 볶을 때도, 리소토나 평일 저녁 한 팬 요리를 만들 때도 두루 어울리죠. 손으로 씻어 물기를 닦고, 물에 오래 담그지 마세요. 식기세척기와 고열은 피해 주세요. 고온에 반복 노출되면 나무가 뒤틀리거나 갈라질 수 있거든요. 가끔 식용유(푸드 세이프 오일)를 발라주면 나무가 마르지 않고, 매일 쓸수록 색이 은은하게 깊어져 더 정이 갑니다.

작업실은 목공을 사랑하는 최재진 작가로부터 시작되었어요. 작은 나무 소품을 깎던 일이 점차 더 고요하고 명상적인 작업으로 이어졌죠. 최재진 작가에게 손도구로 나무를 다듬는 소리는 일종의 명상이며, 모든 작품에는 그 고요함이 조금씩 담겨 있습니다.

이곳의 모든 물건은 실제 일상의 쓰임에서 출발해요. 최재진 작가가 집에서 직접 쓰고 싶었던 물건에서 디자인이 시작되고, 정말로 곁에 둘 만한 물건이 될 때까지 여러 번의 테스트를 거칩니다. 그의 믿음은 단순합니다—일상의 물건은 단순하고, 실용적이며, 오래 쓸 수 있어야 한다는 것. 쉽게 바꾸는 물건이 아니라, 소중히 여기며 오래도록 곁에 두는 물건을 지향합니다.
