Smooth enough for soft bread

A metal knife can drag and tear a warm slice of bread; a wooden one glides. This butter knife is carved from a single piece of solid wood, with a broad, softly rounded edge that spreads without cutting into the crumb and a handle shaped to be easy to hold. It's an everyday tool, meant to live on the table rather than in a drawer. Finished with natural beeswax, it shows a crisp grain and stays easy to care for. Choose deep walnut or bright birch — each piece one of a kind.

How to use it

It handles the whole soft-spread family: butter and jam at breakfast, cream cheese on a bagel, soft cheese on a board, pâté or nut butter alongside crackers. Pair it with the Long Jam Spoon for a tidy breakfast setting, or set a couple out on a cheese board so guests aren't reaching for the same knife. Hand wash and dry it rather than leaving it to soak, and keep it out of the dishwasher and away from high heat, which can warp or crack wood over time. Rub in a little food-safe oil from time to time, and with everyday use and that bit of care, the wood only deepens in tone and gets lovelier over the years.

부드럽게 바르는 건 거의 다 소화해요. 아침의 버터와 잼, 베이글에 크림치즈, 보드 위 부드러운 치즈, 크래커에 곁들이는 파테나 견과 버터까지요. 롱 잼 스푼과 함께 두면 아침 상차림이 깔끔하게 완성되고, 치즈 보드에는 두어 개 놓아 손님들이 한 나이프를 두고 기다리지 않게 하세요. 손으로 씻어 물기를 닦고, 물에 오래 담그지 마세요. 식기세척기와 고열은 피해 주세요. 고온에 반복 노출되면 나무가 뒤틀리거나 갈라질 수 있거든요. 가끔 식용유(푸드 세이프 오일)를 얇게 발라주면 쓸수록 색이 깊어져, 오래 쓸수록 더 예뻐지는 물건이에요.

작업실은 목공을 사랑하는 최재진 작가로부터 시작되었어요. 작은 나무 소품을 깎던 일이 점차 더 고요하고 명상적인 작업으로 이어졌죠. 최재진 작가에게 손도구로 나무를 다듬는 소리는 일종의 명상이며, 모든 작품에는 그 고요함이 조금씩 담겨 있습니다.

이곳의 모든 물건은 실제 일상의 쓰임에서 출발해요. 최재진 작가가 집에서 직접 쓰고 싶었던 물건에서 디자인이 시작되고, 정말로 곁에 둘 만한 물건이 될 때까지 여러 번의 테스트를 거칩니다. 그의 믿음은 단순합니다—일상의 물건은 단순하고, 실용적이며, 오래 쓸 수 있어야 한다는 것. 쉽게 바꾸는 물건이 아니라, 소중히 여기며 오래도록 곁에 두는 물건을 지향합니다.
