Agarwood sits at the heart of Hye Yum's Dalbit Chimhyang-hwan. It forms only when certain tropical trees in parts of Southeast Asia are wounded and slowly seal themselves with a dark, fragrant resin over many years, and because so little is produced, it has long been counted among the most precious ingredients in East Asian tradition. Dalbit Chimhyang-hwan adds deer antler velvet and six-year Korean red ginseng, along with three Korean herbs long used together, prepared rehmannia root, cornelian cherry, and angelica root, and binds them with honey.

Bound with honey, wrapped in gold

Hye Yum grinds every ingredient in a patented fine-particle mill, so each ball is soft rather than gritty. Korean honey makes up nearly half of each ball, and nothing goes in beyond the listed ingredients, preservatives included. To finish, each ball is coated in a thin layer of edible gold leaf, a touch that marks it as a gift for a special occasion.

How to take it

Take one ball a day, chewed slowly with water. The honey's sweetness opens onto the deep fragrance of agarwood, with a gentle, woody bitterness from the red ginseng and herbs at the end.
