About

Interview with HWANG Jooyeon...

I am Hwang Jooyeon of Joseon Yugi.ย  We are an artisan family business that has come down three generations, manufacturing bangjja yugi bronzeware, known to be benefic since ancient times, using the traditional casting method.ย  The company began when my late father Hwang Joong-sik, who passed away two years ago, moved to Bucheon in 1978 and established Daeji Crafts (Metal), which started as a small brass shop (smithy) by my grandfather Hwang Yeonggunong in Hwangnam-dong, Gyeongju.ย  Initially making Buddhist ceremonial supplies and copper crafts, we expanded into bronze relics and cultural asset restoration as our technology became more recognized.

From 1990 onwards, we became known as the workshop specializing in manufacturing yugi bronzeware.ย  Changing our company name to Joseon Yugi in 2008, we have been making and selling yugi bronzeware, offering diverse designs and lines that suit modern-day people's needs.

In particular, almost every year from 2012 to 2021, we participated in the National Palace Museum of Korea- hosted Jongmyo ritual dishes restoration project alongside a relic restoration company, with our yugi products being used in the UNESCO-registered Jongmyo ritual event.ย  Currently, the six artisan masters who started working with my father in 1978 are still with us, leading the company with me.

Yugi Bronzeware of Joseon Yugi

Joseon Yugi Workshop uses a traditional alloy of copper (83.3%) and tin (16.7%) without any use of chemicals like enamel. The workshop follows a 16th-century traditional casting technique based on historical documents (Yongje Chonghwa, 1525). The production process involves 9 meticulous steps. First, the copper-tin alloy is melted, and molten metal is poured into molds made from special clay, a technique unique to the workshop. Each piece is then handcrafted and polished to perfection through several stages of finishing.

Korean yugi (brassware) is known for its unique properties. It turns dark upon contact with toxins and has natural antibacterial properties, protecting against bacteria like E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus. These properties make yugi a highly hygienic choice for dining. Historically, it was used in royal table settings for Korean kings, symbolizing luxury and tradition.

At Joseon Yugi Workshop, skilled artisans heat the metal to 1,200ยฐC, quenching and tempering it four times to create thick, durable pieces like gamaseot (traditional cauldron).

How to Care for Your Yugi

  1. First Use: Soak the yugi in a solution of water (30 parts) and vinegar (1 part) for one hour. This helps bring out its subtle golden sheen. For regular cleaning, mix dish soap with vinegar to prevent tarnishing.

  2. Seasoning: Seasoning your yugi with vinegar helps reduce any metallic odor. Note that exposure to heat may cause discoloration, and rice marks may appearโ€”this is a natural characteristic of yugi.

  3. Cleaning: Use a green scouring pad for cleaning, and occasionally use a yugi-specific cleaner like Astonish to maintain its shine.

  4. Prevent Tarnishing: After washing, wipe your yugi dry with a soft cloth to prevent water stains, as moisture can easily cause spotting.

  5. Removing Stains: If stains appear during use, rub gently with a yugi-specific scouring pad along the grain. Afterward, wash again with regular dish soap and ensure the item is thoroughly dried before storage. You can find these scouring pads at KIM'C MARKET.

By following these care instructions, your yugi will not only last a long time but also become more beautiful with use.
