Gyeongokgo's four ingredients in one bite

Hye Yum's Neulok-hwan is made from the same four ingredients as gyeongokgo: rehmannia root, white poria, ginseng, and honey. Gyeongokgo has been treasured in Korea for generations as something to take when one wants to keep up one's strength, and it was traditionally simmered into a thick paste and eaten by the spoonful. Neulok-hwan binds the same ingredients with honey into small, bite-size hwan that are easier to store and carry. Every ingredient is Korean: rehmannia makes up the largest share, joined by white poria, a fungus that grows on pine roots, and ginseng, all held together with Korean honey.

Geumsan ginseng, finely milled

The ginseng is four-year root from Geumsan in South Chungcheong Province, whose traditional ginseng farming system was designated a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization in 2018. Hye Yum grinds everything in a patented fine-particle mill, so each ball is soft rather than gritty. It is sweetened only with Korean honey, with nothing added beyond what is on the label.

How to take it

Take one ball a day, chewed slowly with water. The taste is earthy and gently sweet from the honey, with a faint bitterness of ginseng at the end. Each ball comes in its own small case, so it travels well in a bag or sits neatly on a desk. 인삼은 충남 금산에서 4년 동안 키운 것을 사용합니다. 금산의 전통 인삼 농업은 2018년 유엔식량농업기구(FAO) 세계중요농업유산으로 지정되었어요. 혜윰은 특허받은 초미립자 분쇄기로 재료를 곱게 갈아, 씹을 때 거칠지 않고 부드럽습니다. 단맛은 국내산 벌꿀로만 내고, 표기된 원재료 외에는 아무것도 넣지 않았습니다.
