The queen bee's food

Inside every hive, young worker bees produce a pale, creamy substance and feed it to the queen throughout her life. That is royal jelly, and because a hive makes so little of it, it has always been one of the most valued things a beekeeper can harvest; records from ancient China describe it as something presented only to the emperor. On its own it is sharply tangy, almost sour, and spoils quickly. Folded into honey, it keeps the condition it had in the comb, and the honey's sweetness softens its edge. Worker Bee uses fresh royal jelly from Korean beekeepers and blends it in at 30%.

Graded Korean honey, a porcelain jar

The honey is Korean and graded, chosen from honey that has passed 25 recognized quality tests, and it is produced only by domestic beekeepers. Nothing else goes in: no preservatives, artificial colors, or artificial sweeteners. Each set is made to order within a few days of purchase, filled into an Icheon white porcelain jar from Icheon, Korea's best-known ceramics town, and paired with a mother-of-pearl spoon, a traditional Korean craft.

How to enjoy it

Take a spoonful straight from the jar, or stir it into warm (not hot) water or tea. The label suggests one to two spoonfuls, twice a day. Expect a tangy brightness under the honey and, sometimes, a light tingle at the back of the throat; both come from the royal jelly. It is also lovely drizzled over plain yogurt or a slice of fresh cheese. Once the jar is empty, it makes a fine container for salt, sugar, or a small bunch of flowers.

벌꿀은 국내 양봉가가 생산한 국내산 벌꿀로, 공인된 25가지 품질 기준을 통과한 것만 씁니다. 그 밖에는 아무것도 넣지 않았어요. 보존료도, 인공 색소도, 인공 감미료도 없습니다. 주문이 들어오면 며칠 안에 만들어, 도자기 고장 이천의 백자 단지에 담고 한국 전통 공예인 자개 스푼을 곁들입니다.
