The down-to-Earth but very tasty Jeju Omegi Tteok!
Omegi tteok, or rice cakes, are a local Jeju specialty, reflecting the island’s history where food was scarce. The main ingredient of the original omegi is glutinous millet, one of the few crops that flourished in the once barren environment of Jeju. Locals would make an aloholic drink called omegi with the millet, then make rice cakes with the remaining ingredient. After Jeju was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, omegi tteok attracted much attention. They are readily available in many long-standing omegi tteok shops located all over the island and airport specialty shops. A visit to Jeju is not complete without buying a box or two of these treats as gifts.
While the tteok was originally primarily made with millet, its proportions have been reduced in recent times using high-quality glutinous rice instead for better texture with red bean and mugwort dominating the filling.
Big Happiness has taken extra care in producing these traditional Jeju tteok treats, using primarily Korean and Jeju ingredients. The not-too-sweet, roughly shaped tteok covered in red bean topping looks and tastes very much like the traditional omegi.

수수한 팥고물의 제주 오메기떡
오메기떡은 먹거리가 귀했던 제주의 역사를 반영하는 음식입니다. 오리지널의 주재료는 차조라는 작물인데요, 척박한 과거의 제주 환경에서 차조만큼은 쑥쑥 잘 자랐기 때문이에요. 제주 원주민들은 차조로 오메기술을 만든 후, 남은 재료로 오메기떡을 만들어 먹었죠. 제주도가 세계자연유산으로 조명을 받은 후 이 오메기떡도 아주 유명세를 탔어요. 제주 곳곳에 원조 오메기떡집이 있고 공항 특산물 숍에도 오메기 떡을 쉽게 볼 수 있어 선물용으로 꼭 하나씩 사오는 떡입니다.
원조는 차조를 주원료하지만 최근에는 식감을 더 좋게 하려고 품질 좋은 찹쌀과 팥, 쑥을 메인으로 하고 차조의 양을 적게 해 생산됩니다.
제주 전통 떡인만큼 ‘큰행복’은 설탕만을 제외한 차조, 찹쌀, 팥, 어린 쑥 등 모든 재료를 한국산과 제주산을 썼습니다. 과하게 달지 않고 울퉁불퉁한 팥 고물의 투박한 모양새가 전통 그대로의 느낌을 주네요.
