The Goodness of the Korean Ssanghwacha, Now in Easy Granule Form

If the French have their vin chaud come winter, Koreans have ssanghwacha, a popular drink with a very traditional origin.  It is inspired by ssanghwatang, a Korean medicine prescription for fatigue.  More than twenty medicinal ingredients are slow-boiled to give the tea a distinct sweet and pungent medicine-like taste, topped with walnuts and pine nuts.  People used to drink this tea in traditional teahouses called a dabang in the latter part of the twentieth century, at which time the drink was served with an egg yolk floating on top.  Recently, retro trends have brought it back, and younger generation kids are visiting dabangs to savor this unique medicinal tea, egg yolk and all. • Just as the name suggests, the Chinese characters ssanghwa mean “to come together in harmony.”  The ingredients do just that – optimally harmonize with each other.
• Comes in granule form, so it melts quickly in water,  more so when it’s hot
• A tea with an earthy, savory taste without being bitter.  The Original flavor includes roasted brown sugar and toppings of almonds and Korean sesame seeds, and dried jujubes.
• Includes a measuring spoon.  Add 2/3 of a paper cup of water to one spoonful of tea.  Add honey if you prefer it sweeter.

If you are new to ssanghwacha, we recommend you begin with the Original flavor.  The pungent ginger extract forms an excellent balance, and there are plenty of toppings to make things colorful.  The Korean local sesame seeds pair exceptionally well with the tea, giving it a pleasant aroma and a wonderful aftertaste.
