          Description

Straight Out of the Freezer, Delicious Cheongdo Persimmon Malengyi

Koreans love their persimmons.  They have them right when they are ripe and crunchy; when they become the extra-ripen, soft, and far sweeter hongsi; and even as frozen hongsi.  They dry them whole, hanging in the natural breeze until they become the very chewy and sweet gotgam to enjoy over winter, or only semi-dry them into what we call malengyi, a supple yet chewy treat. What we bring you is Persimmon Malengyi by a company called Ice Ripe Persimmon.  They take rather flat-shaped seedless persimmons called bansi grown in Cheongdo, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and dry them after cutting them into bite-size pieces.  The orange-colored chewy persimmons are loaded with beta-carotene and way too easy to fall in love with.

We all know beta-carotene is good for us.  Persimmons are also rich in vitamins A and C, antioxidants, dietary fiber, and tannins. And the Ice Ripe Persimmon Cheongdo Farming Association uses its unique technology to ensure none of these benefits are lost while dehydrating the fruit into malengyi.  In fact, the drying process increases the nutrient content.   The vitamin C of Malengyi is six times that of a hongsi, the extra-ripen persimmon. It’s a great snack to boost your immune system for the fall and winter and keep away the cold.

So how do you make this sweet and chewy persimmon malengyi that is even good for you?  A beautifully ripe Cheongdo bansi is peeled, cut into three or four pieces, then dried, and aged in the pristine air of Cheongdo under the sun.  It is perfect for storing it in your freezer and having it cold.  Even though it’s dried fruit, the inside is soft and moist, so it’s like eating a sugared jelly cold.  But this is nature’s sweetness, so a jelly has nothing on a malengyi.  We dare say it could be just as good as ice cream!

          ※ A Note of Caution

Once you start, you may not be able to stop eating until the bag is empty! If you’re watching what you eat, be extra careful.

Freezer storage is a must.  Let it sit at room temperature for 1 minute, and it will defrost quickly to a perfect state to enjoy.  The persimmon may spoil if left out at room temperature for too long.

The white powder on the surface is the crystalized glucose and fructose of the persimmon itself, and it is perfectly safe to consume.

What You Should Know about Bansi from Cheongdo, Gyeongsangbuk-do

One of the best persimmon varieties in Korea and the only seedless one, making them far easier to have

★ An addictive chewy texture that has the consistency of somewhere between the dried persimmon (gotgam) and extra-ripened persimmon (hongsi)

★ Exceptionally soft with high moisture content and delightfully sweet with zero astringent taste

★ Easy to digest and classified as a cooling food according to traditional Korean medicine

★ Eating persimmons causes constipation is an exaggeration. Water-soluble tannins in the astringent taste present in unripe persimmons absorb water in the intestine to cause constipation.  Well-ripened persimmons can help relieve constipation as they are rich in dietary fiber.
